My mind becomes blank

My favorite thing about playing cricket and especially batting is the anticipation of the opponents’ delivery.

Right before he comes running with the ball in his hand, my mind races. Races with uncertainty. “What’s going to happen? Where’s the ball going to go?”

Sometimes, I have thoughts like “Can I successfully play this delivery, and what if I forget how to hit the ball”.

But every single time, all of those thoughts wash away the moment the ball is barreling towards me.

My mind becomes blank. It goes into instinct mode. My only concern is hitting the ball, and my body goes into autopilot.

I don’t think, I just “do”.

That’s why I love playing cricket. I become present without even trying. I become present out of necessity.

Michael Jordan’s greatest achievement was his ability to always be present.
